چکیده

The effect of vagotomy on gallbladder function was investigated in a clinical and experimental study. In the clinical study both the size of the gallbladder and its capacity to respond to cholecystokinin were evaluated radiologically before and after vagotomy. In studies in the rabbit, both the immediate effect of vagotomy on the gallbladder and the effect of varying doses of cholecystokinin on gallbladder pressure were studied before and after vagotomy. In studies in the cat the long-term effect of vagotomy was studied with respect to the histology of the gallbladder and the composition of bile. The clinical investigation showed that vagotomy was followed by a significant increase in the volume of the gallbladder and that the effect of the cholecystokinin on the gallbladder remained unchanged after vagotomy. In experiments in the rabbit it was found that cholecystokinin in a dose of 1 unit/kg body weight exerted a somewhat lesser effect on gallbladder pressure after vagotomy than before, while after vagotomy a dose, approximately four times greater, resulted in a stronger gallbladder response. Further, the experiments showed that the chemical composition of the bile seemed to be altered after vagotomy, while the gallbladder remained histologically essentially unchanged.

The Effect of Breast Feeding on Plasma Cholecystokinin in Neonates

Cholecystokinin (CCK), a gastrointestinal hormone, is secreted by the duodenum in response to the presence of gastric acid, amino acids and nutrients in particular fat in the duodenal lumen (1). The half life of this hormone is about 2.5 minutes and the kidney is considered the major site of its uptake from the systemic circulation. Cholecystokinin is responsible for stimulating gallbladder con...

Correlation of release and actions of cholecystokinin in dogs before and after vagotomy.

Pancreatic secretion of enzymes and gallbladder contraction in response to intestinal stimulants are thought to be mediated through the vagus nerve and by means of release of cholecystokinin (CCK). The effect of truncal vagotomy on the release of CCK, pancreatic protein secretion, and gallbladder pressure (all stimulated by intraduodenal instillation of oleate) was studied in five dogs. Each do...

Effect of distension of the gallbladder on plasma renin activity in anesthetized pigs.

BACKGROUND Gallbladder pathology has been associated with cardiovascular disease. Recently, we showed that gallbladder distension in anesthetized pigs reflexly increased heart rate, arterial pressure, and coronary and renal vascular resistance through efferent sympathetic mechanisms. Renin release is affected by sympathetic output, and angiotensin liberation may result in vasoconstriction. This...

Noradrenergic inhibition of canine gallbladder contraction and murine pancreatic secretion during stress by corticotropin-releasing factor.

Gastrointestinal secretory and motor responses are profoundly altered during stress; but the effects of stress and its mediator(s) on the two major gut functions, exocrine pancreatic secretion and gallbladder motility, are unknown. We therefore developed two animal models that allowed us to examine the effects of acoustic stress on canine gallbladder contraction and restraint stress on rat exoc...

Effect of selective proximal and truncal vagotomy on canine gallbladder bile composition.

In 6 dogs the influence of consecutively a selective proximal vagotomy (SPV) and a truncal vagotomy (TV) on gallbladder bile composition was studied. Following SPV no significant changes in biliary lipids were observed. On the other hand, after TV an increase of deoxycholic acid (D) and a concomitant decrease of cholic acid (C) occurred, resulting in a marked increase of the D/C ratio. Although...
